So You’re an Instructional Designer–But What Does That Mean?

Instructional design, in many ways, is about balancing multiple perspectives–the birds-eye big picture and the ground-level street view. Think of a map. If we want to reach a certain destination, we will quickly realize from a survey of the map that there are multiple routes available to get there. We will also realize that there isn’t necessarily a “right” route to take. The best route depends on our priorities: Do we want to take the most expedient route? Do we desire a scenic route? Do we seek the route that will take us past a particular landmark?

A map shows the route choices, but doesn't tell us the best option.

So, too, we must consider the multiple routes possible to meet the goals of a learning experience. An instructional designer works with a team of subject matter experts and educators to make choices from among those possibilities for the benefit of the learner. It’s an exciting field!
